One Shot solutions?Hi folks: I'm just curious what has progressed in the "One Shot" pano world of late... Are there any viable or useful optics out there, a la Kaidan's 360 One or 0-360.com's? __________________

I use one shot systems for small work
I have used both the Kaidan 360One and the 0-360 optics. I actually got one of the first optics that Kaidan made. 0-360 made the same thing but much better. Now Kaidan makes almost the same things as 0-360. If I were to get one now I'd still go for the 0-360. The only problem, which exists for both, is that the mirror surface is scratch prone. When I was using them 100% I planned on getting a new one about every 6 months. I'm actually going to put a 0-360 on ebay in the next week or so. Here is a link for the absolute limit for the optic resolution. I shot it using a Canon XTi and a 0-360 optic.

one shot systems
Hi Dan:
Thanks for the info & link!
It looks like Kaidan's and 0-360's are still the only games in town, then... I'll check into the 0-360 one for now, I think.
I'm pretty impressed with your example; You've really dialed in the camera settings for that combo.

one shot systems
Thank you. I have used them for years. They do a great job for something small and quick, especially if there is motion in the frame. My setup used a Canon DRLS and 17-40mm L lens. Makes a great setup. It's very "set it and forget it".

other one-shot system?
Someone on another list posted this info:
When I wanted to buy one, I was getting convinced that the http://0-360.com
version would be the best choice, due to material choice.
Kaidan is plastic, while 0-360 is metal.
Another solution could be the p-Mirror from http://panorama-hardware.com/
Prices:
Kaidan: €488 or $750
0-360: €388 or $595
p-Mirror: €249 or $382

Hi Patrick... I know I don't post much here, but you could at least give credit to the original poster, and even provide information to where it was posted. Somehow "Trausti posted this over at the FPP Google groups" sounds more relevant and apreciative than "Someone on another list posted this".

re: Ehem (attribution)
Well, Trausti, you have now given it proper attribution. Thanks!
I'm generally pretty good about it, but didn't put your name with this one for some reason (I had snagged a quick text clipping to my desktop, which just had the relevant bits minus name). It has absolutely nothing to do with how much you post here. A simple email to me directly could have fixed it quickly, just as well as a public rebuke.

Back to the useful part of this thread: Did you happen to buy one? How did it go?

Anyways... I got very close to buying the 0-360 system, but the project I would have needed it for, was flushed out and away, so still to this day I have no experience with those systems.
It is kind of strange that there isn't any (?) site offering a comparison of the systems in hardware quality, software quality and outcome quality through the provided players and after converting the donuts to cube faces and put into FPP for instance. Obviously all 3 systems would have to be tested with the same camera at the same location under the same lighting conditions, in order to be compared for a clear cut result.

re: one-shot comparisons
I suppose it is strange, when you consider how many comparisons are out there for multi-shot systems... But, on the other hand, the niche of people using the one-shots regularly is probably small; That, and the one-shot systems generally get poo-pooed by "real" VR shooters.

I cannot recommend P-Mirror
Hi Patrick and others,
I once bought the P-Mirror because I thought it was a nice-to-have besides "real" panography using the fisheye and stuff. But the quality was so disastrous that I immediately returned it. I don't know if the others (Kaidan and 0-360) are any better, but I doubt it -- the distorsion is just too strong to achieve good results also at the edges when correcting it. In fact, I had horizontal straight lines that simply were not straight (wobbly, somehow), and all in all it's unusable I think. You could as well take a Christmas ball (http://wiki.panotools.org/ChristmasBallPanoTutor), the results are very similar in regards of (bad) quality. But maybe some day Olympus will bring us something usable in this direction: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/07/olympus-omni-di.html
